Overview:
EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute’s Center for Sustainable Transport, is seeking an Urban Development or Urban Planning expert for its India Program. The successful candidate will be based in Bangalore, India and will report to Director – India Program (based in Mumbai, India). The candidate will also set-up and lead the Bangalore office by leveraging existing relationships. He will be responsible for providing technical assistance to local projects, project management, research and overall coordination for the Urban Development & Accessibility practice area throughout India.
Responsibilities:
Lead set up of a new practice area and anchor city by:
o Leveraging existing relationships, establishing new ones with public and private sector partners across India.
oDeveloping a network of experts who can be relied on to help deliver results in projects.
• Engage with other members of the EMBARQ Network, especially in Mexico, to bring international experiences on the subject area to India. Participate in the EMBARQ Network Urban Development & Accessibility Practice Area.
• Identify and develop projects with sustainable urban development components, establish relationships with agencies or private sector partners implementing them and define EMBARQ’s role to make them better.
• Provide sound technical assistance/advice, build relationships of trust and contribute substantively to the projects.
• Organize, facilitate workshops and/or similar events to develop ideas and approaches to work in this practice area.
• Lead set up of a new Bangalore office by leveraging existing relationships through which EMBARQ can work on a day-to-day basis with public and private sector partners in Bangalore and other cities in South India.
• Participate actively in EMBARQ India’s ambitious and innovative growth strategy.
oBuilding a team of young planners and engineers to help deliver results in projects
Qualifications:
8-12 years experience in urban planning or urban development. Specific experience in transit oriented development, new urbanism, sustainable urban development preferable.
• Degree, in urban planning, architecture, engineering or related fields. Graduate degree (e.g. Master level) in subject field preferable.
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Good computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and the Internet.
• Capability to learn and use software applications for budgeting, financing, and reporting that are used by EMBARQ and WRI
• Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret master plans, town planning schemes and development control regulations.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Hindi and other Indian regional languages. Must be fluent in Hindi / possess bilingual fluency in Hindi and English.
• Detail-oriented, highly organized
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities and work under pressure with tight deadlines
