Installing computer memory in a laptop can be a one minute job. This is of course assuming that you have purchased the right type of RAM that is compatible with your laptop. Only certain types of RAM will work with a particular computer and it is best that you seek technical assistance before purchasing RAM that you wish to install on your laptop. We will assume that you know which RAM is compatible for your computer and will give you the steps involved in the installation process.
First, turn off your laptop and remove any power cables. Make sure that the system is turned off and not just on standby mode. Once the power is off, turn the laptop upside down and examine the underside of it. If the laptop has an owner's manual, look it up to identify the memory module. In some laptops, the memory slot will not be accessible from the outside and will need dismantling. This is not something that you should try. Take it to a computer store for professional installation.
In most computers however, the memory module will be protected by a plate that will be fastened with a few screws. Remove these screws and set them aside safely as you do not want to lose them. If you have to remove an old memory module to replace it with a new one, gently remove the clasps or latches that hold the chip down in place. Once the latches have been released, gently lift the chip at a 45 degree angle and then pull outwards. It will come off easily. Now, take the new RAM chip and insert it at the same 45 degree angle at which you removed the old chip. Gently bring it down and push it into place until you hear the latches or clasps lock back in place.
That is it; your new memory chip for the laptop is installed. Remember to put the cover plate back and the screws back on. Once you have installed your new memory chip, just power up your system. Most laptops will be able to automatically detect the change in memory. Some however might require you to go into the BIOS to change the settings yourself. You can enter BIOS by pressing a certain key, usually F2, at the time of start up. You will see a prompt at the time of booting that says something like "Press F2 (or some other key) to enter setup". Once inside the set up, you can follow the menu items to quickly change your memory settings which can be automatically detected.
