Many business owners search for an ideal business model to more guarantee their success. They want to find the right formula that will make their lives easier and get them to their vision much faster.
Yet, applying a cookie cutter business model would be like attempting to raise a family by treating all your children the same. Many of us with families will testify, that the consequences doing that are sometimes unpleasant, yet generally disastrous.
Though very general guidelines are helpful, businesses, like families, are organic - and are best helped by being flexible to the changing needs that both the business and the business owner has. In other words - they key to success will be to balance the needs of the business, and the needs of the business owner at the same time.
Balancing Personal Needs
The first area for business owners to balance are the needs in their own personal lives.
We are made up of a hierarchy of needs. In other words there is priority of needs that we have as people, and we will only be able to be our best if those needs are met, in the correct order.
Unfortunately for many business owners, the lack of prioritizing our basic needs leads to an unbalanced lifestyle that affects us physically, emotionally, mentally and socially, and prevents us from achieving true greatness.
Only when we commit to truly living a life honoring those needs will we be able to be our best, and help the organization be its best as well.
The Challenge
To establish a great enterprise can put a lot of pressure on an individual. The temptation will be to sacrifice certain areas of our lives, that we know are important, but that we mistakenly believe we can temporarily place on hold, or do without.
Things such as the physical needs of rest or nutrition; our peace of mind; or time spent with our families. We take these for granted, and we sacrifice them to achieve what we believe are more important immediate needs.
Yet we must consider, what are we willing to trade these things for? Is a business really worth losing our health? Is the revenue that we accumulate truly worth our peace of mind? Is there any business achievement that would be worth the pain and suffering that one can cause their loved ones, or worse yet, lose their families?
The Essence of A Successful Business
Business greatness is based on the idea that the needs of human beings need to be honored above all things. Since people make up business, the principles that honor the needs of others are what will produce personal and business greatness.
To sacrifice one's own needs or the needs of others to achieve a goal, may help one achieve success, but at a devastating cost to one's life. Greatness will always elude the man or woman that puts their goals over the needs of others; while greatness will fill the lives and business of those who honor the needs of people.
There are needs that business leaders must commit themselves to fulfilling in order to be their best for the organization and to truly live out the principles of business greatness. These needs include:
Physical Needs:
Sleep - Getting the required amount of sleep (usually 7 - 8 hours).
Breaks - Taking breaks (regular, lunch) during the day in between work sessions.
Vacation - Taking a minimum of two weeks of vacation per year.
Work Hours - Working no longer than a maximum of ten hours a day.
Work Days - Working no longer than a maximum of five days a week.
Eating healthy - Generally eating foods that will build the body, not tear it down (doughnuts, pizza, cookies, soda, etc.).
Emotional Needs:
Family - Leaving work at work and giving your family your undivided attention when spending time with them.
Friends - Reaching out to friends and spending time with them.
Hobbies - Engage in positive hobbies that can help the mind and body rejuvenate itself.
Mental Needs:
Breaks - Taking periodic breaks during the day to give your mind a rest.
Reading - Reading books to stimulate the mind to greater understanding.
Mental health days - Taking a full day to not do any work, but use to rejuvenate your mind and body (every four - six weeks).
Social Needs:
Charity - Consider volunteering or being involved in projects to help the needy.
Community - Consider being involved in a community organization.
Conclusion
Is there an ideal business model? Yes, but only if it is based on balancing the needs of people and the needs of the organization. Greatness is achievable only when a business owner first takes care of themselves and their families and then devotes the time to meeting the needs of the business. Then and only then will they be able to experience the richness that does not just come from making money, but from the fullness of one's life.
